Here is a selection of books and films related to India

The books I have read :

Short-stories based in India or the US. The author is of Indian descent, but born in UK. This book has received the Pulitzer Prize for Short Stories.

Hilarious tale of 2 British backpacker in India.

A very serious historical, social and anthropolgical analysis of Calcutta that has now become a classic.

The confrontation of Western backpackers with Indian culture, their quest for spirituality and often blatant failures. The author is Indian and has travelled with backpackers around her country.

Siddhartha is the son of a Brahman who abandon everything to become an ascetic in order to understand the meaning of life. He briefly followed Gautama (the Buddha) with thousands of others, but discovered that he could only follow his own soul. This is a fiction, not a historical book, and Siddhartha is not Siddhartha Gautama, though his life shares a lot of similitudes.
